CIPA’s Standards for Quality and Safety Are Benchmarks For Certifying Pharmacy Advertisers on Google.ca.
The Canadian International Pharmacy Association (CIPA) has been named the official accrediting organization for all online pharmacy advertisements in Canada by Google AdWords. Under the new policy, online pharmacies that want to advertise on Google Canada (http://www.google.ca) must be certified as meeting CIPA quality and safety standards.
Founded in 2002, CIPA is a Canadian association of licensed, retail pharmacies that sell prescription drugs made by the leading name-brand manufacturers. CIPA member pharmacies have served more than 1 million U.S. customers each year, with a 100 percent safety record.
“CIPA is committed to ensuring that all patients have access to quality prescription drugs at affordable prices, and we will continue to be a tireless advocate for consumer safety in distance care pharmacy,” said CIPA President Troy Harwood-Jones. “There are a lot of rogue pharmacies on the Internet, so we look forward to working with Google to make shopping for pharmaceutical drugs online safer for all consumers.”
Additionally, CIPA officials hope to work with Google and others to develop clear policies for international pharmacy advertising, based on appropriate safety standards. Google has not yet addressed the proper certification and approval methods for international pharmacy ads, and its new policy restricts legitimate international pharmacies, including CIPA member companies, from advertising on Google in the U.S. That policy will make it harder for millions of patients in the United States to locate safe online sources for affordable prescription drugs.
“Removing patient access in the U.S. will not remove patient need,” Harwood-Jones points out. “Our Web site and phone lines are constantly busy fielding inquiries from Americans who cannot afford the maintenance medicines they need. These American patients are buying pharmaceuticals online, and they need guidance and direction to locate safe sources for reasonably priced medications.”
