TORONTO, November 2, 2004 - When a Canadian officer on active duty in Kabul needs to know how to conduct vehicle convoy operations, how does he obtain knowledge on the subject from others who have been in the same situation?
He uses information technology - a unique knowledge-management system designed and implemented by the Canadian Armed Forces, which makes information available anywhere in the world to enable the army to respond faster to dangerous situations.
This system, called the Army Lessons Learned Knowledge Warehouse, has won the Diamond Award of Excellence from the Canadian Information Productivity Awards (CIPA), as the best IT project implemented in Canada in 2004.
Lieutenant Colonel Jacques Hamel, Director of Land Command & Information for the Department of National Defence, accepted the award at the 12th annual CIPA Gala Banquet at the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel before a black-tie audience of senior executives from across Canada.
The Army Lessons Learned Knowledge Warehouse connects Canadian soldiers by satellite to a data warehouse, from which they can draw information by asking questions through a Web application. Information gathered from previous army experience can be available within minutes, compared with the six months to a year it used to require.
This remarkable innovation is one of 19 results-based IT solutions selected as winners of the 2004 CIPA competition. CIPA, www.cipa.com, is Canada's oldest and largest awards program in the field of information technology and the premier showcase for Canadian IT and innovation.
"The organizations honoured tonight have implemented solutions that clearly show how information technology improves the quality of life in Canada - and even the protection of life," said CIPA President & CEO Norm Kirkpatrick.
Alain Beaudry, President of Capgemini Canada, CIPA Managing Sponsor, added, "These companies and institutions have again demonstrated that Canada knows how to be competitive on the world stage."
The Army Lessons Learned Knowledge Warehouse solution also won the Gold Award in the category of Efficiency & Operational Improvements. Other Gold Award winners by category are:
