Hypertension, or high blood pressure, occurs when the pressure in the arteries is too high.

This in turn makes it more difficult for the heart to pump blood throughout the body. There may be no symptoms, but in severe cases headache, lightheadedness, nausea or vomiting, and nosebleeds may occur.

Treatment for hypertension includes diet and exercise, and taking medicine. Common drug classes prescribed to treat hypertension are:

  • ACE inhibitors
  • ACE inhibitor / calcium channel blocker combinations
  • ACE inhibitor / thiazide diuretic combinations
  • Aldosterone antagonists
  • Aldosterone antagonist / Thiazide diuretic combinations
  • ARBs
  • ARB / Thiazide diuretic combinations
  • ARB / Thiazide-like combinations
  • Arteriorlar vasodilators
  • Arteriolar vasodilator / Thiazide diuretic combinations
  • Beta agonist / Thiazide diuretic combinations
  • Beta blockers
  • Calcium channel blockers
  • Catecholamine depletors
  • Central alpha agonists
  • Loop diuretics
